When the county cut the Saturday bus, the village brass band did the only thing it knew how to do: it made a scene.

For eight weeks they played at a different stop each Saturday morning, eleven stops in all, timed to the old timetable. Residents came to listen and, mostly, to complain to each other about the bus.

The service came back in March. The band kept playing anyway.

"We discovered the stops were good venues," says the bandmaster, deadpan. "Excellent acoustics at the chemist's."
